   Notes: Methods for dry mass and energy are described in Methods section. Nitrogen was quantified with a Digesdahl Digestion Apparatus (# 23130-18) and Odyssey Spectrophotometer (DR/2500; Hach, Loveland, Colorado, USA) following the Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen Method (TKN 8075). Fiber was determined from quantifying the acid detergent fiber (Goering and Van Soest 1970) of each diet treatment using an Ankom fiber analyzer 200/200 (Ankom, Fairport, New York, USA) and barley standard (35% ADF).
