Appendix C. Common garden methodologies.

Three flow-through water tables at Long Marine Lab, University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC), were used to create the common garden. The location of each parent within and between water tables was random with respect to population and tidal height, and locations were re-randomized 3–4 times a week. Light intensity in the water tables was 60–70 umol photons m-2s-1, provided by full spectrum florescent lights on a 12:12 h light:dark cycle. Low tides were simulated by shutting off the inflow and draining the tanks for 4–6 hours every day. Individuals in the common garden were induced to spawn 3–4 times per week to facilitate gamete turnover; thus the gametes used in the second set of experiments for a given population represent the 20th spawning event since the original experiment.
