Appendix C. Additional details concerning the study site.

Fire history. There are no records for fire in the specific study area. No fire had occurred within memory of the USDA Forest Service when I first visited the site 23 years ago (in 1983). One forester with the USDA Forest Service, who has been working on this Ranger District for 30 years, also had not heard of any fire within memory when he started and suggested that indicated that fire has not passed through the specific study area within the last 50 years at a minimum (D. Attichson, personal communication).

Study area extension. The study sites exist on the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, which extends from Utah down through Arizona into New Mexico and up to Colorado. There are canyon drainages across this entire area that are similar to those being studied.

Weather station representativeness. The weather data were gathered from a NOAA station at the nearby Ranger station. This weather station is only 20 km from, and at the same elevation, as the study sites and, thus, highly representative of the weather at the sites.
