Mission Statement: Ecological Monographs serves the missions of Ecology and Ecological Applications for those papers that require greater length because the work reported is particularly complex and multi-faceted. Justification for their length must be based on characteristics of the research, analysis, and presentation of results and not simply because they involve large data sets or long-duration studies.
Ecological Monographs, issued quarterly, publishes complex, multi-faceted studies that demand greater length than those published in Ecology or Ecological Applications. These are not merely long papers, but must tell a truly complicated scientific story with multiple components. Articles for Ecological Monographs are generally over 50 manuscript pages (16 printed pages). When submitting to Monographs, it is extremely important to justify the length of the manuscript in the cover letter in order to be considered for review.
Most papers are handled by a member of the Ecology Board of Editors, although applied papers may be handled by an Ecological Applications board member. (For applied papers, choose Ecological Applications as the journal, and indicate in your cover letter that, given the length, it can be considered for Ecological Monographs.)
Abstracts should be no longer than 350 words.
